Introduction

Tata Power Mumbai Distribution is committed to provide reliable, affordable and quality power supply to over 2.5 Lakh citizens in Mumbai South and Sub-urban area. We are one of the most technologically advanced utilities owing to the effective deployment of aggressive, systematic and stakeholder-centric IT & OT and smart grid initiatives. For effective and efficient operations across various voltage levels, a host of integrated technologies like - DMS, ATS, SAP, LoRa, BOLA, GIS, Smart Metering etc. have been implemented. Apart from having many firsts to its credit, the implementation of technologies in an integrated environment has helped in deriving benefits in terms of AT&C loss reduction, increased reliability and customer delight.

The Network Reliability is specifically measured by SAIFI & SAIDI. These are the global standard of measuring the power reliability for a specific consumer.

SAIFI is the average number of interruptions that a customer would experience whereas SAIDI is the total duration of an outage experience in a particular SAIFI event for a customer.

Initiatives for ensuring supply reliability;

Distribution Management System (DMS) - Real-time monitoring and control of distribution network. Helps in quick fault detection, isolation and restoration of supply.

- IoT based Sub-station monitoring – LoRa (Long Range wireless communication) is installed in sub-stations to have Real-time monitoring and maintenance alerts for abnormality.

BOLA (Better Operations and Life by Analytics) – Installed in Transformer and LV switchgear to monitor Real Time Temperature and Humidity.

Auto Transfer Scheme (ATS) – Designed to automatically transfer the supply of electricity from one source to another in the event of a failure. It’s implemented at DSS and CSS level to restore Power Supply within seconds.

Bifurcation of HT Network – Ring Main Unit (RMU) is installed in HT network to eliminate back to back cable connections in Distribution Sub-station. Helps in quick supply restoration.

- Predictive Maintenance of Equipments – Predictive maintenance helps avoid unexpected equipment failures that cause downtime, leading to improved equipment efficiency and more reliable power supply.

- Smart Device Installations – Dehumidified installed in HV switchgear to avoid condensation on switchgear, Installed Thermax Temperature indicator strips in LV switchgear to record max temperature, Real time monitoring of Transformer Oil level to avoid unnecessary tripping due to low oil level.
